Since its inception, the ROSA Project (Regional Network and Observatory for Water Sustainability) has been tasked with addressing the so-called "water and sanitation crisis in Latin America and the Caribbean." One of its main strategies has been to contribute to accelerating the achievement of SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation). However, the region generally lacks reliable statistics and information on water management, governance, and environmental aspects. Additionally, there is fragmentation of existing information across various national institutions, as well as unequal capacities among countries to report on sustainable water resource management indicators. Consequently, the main objective of the ROSA Project has been to strengthen the capacities of countries in the region to generate and use timely, reliable, and standardized information to promote effective policies and instruments for sustainable water management in a changing environment amid the challenges of climate change.

The “Methane Calculator” is a dynamic and innovative tool developed by Silvia Saravia Matus, Romeo Moers Escoto, Pedro Chavarro, René Salgado, and Alfredo Montañez, experts from the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). This calculator aims to provide a quick and straightforward preliminary assessment of the energy and economic potential of biogas generated in wastewater treatment plants. It focuses on transitioning toward circular models and is designed to demonstrate that even the smallest plants can benefit from this shift, challenging the paradigm that only large-scale facilities have such opportunities.

On November 29, 2024, the Fifth Online Training Session was held as part of the ROSA Project (Network and Observatory for Water Sustainability), titled “Hydrological Monitoring Networks and Ecological Water Flow.” The event aimed to strengthen the capacities of the Plurinational State of Bolivia in the design, implementation, and management of hydrological monitoring networks, while also integrating the topic of ecological water flow. This was achieved through presentations and analysis of concrete experiences and best practices, providing expert insights and experiences from other countries. Lessons and learnings applicable to the Bolivian context were extracted, with special emphasis on the management of transboundary waters. Topics included the standardization of monitoring criteria and indicators, the adoption of agreed-upon protocols, and the importance of ecological flow in water sustainability.

On Monday, November 25, and Tuesday, November 26, the symposium titled “Water, Sanitation, Hygiene, Health, and Equity: Key Elements for Achieving the 2030 Agenda” took place in Lima, Peru. ECLAC, represented by Dr. Silvia Saravia Matus, Economic Affairs Officer of the Natural Resources Division and responsible for water-related issues, participated in the event. The symposium was organized by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the Inter-American Association of Sanitary and Environmental Engineering (AIDIS). Dr. Saravia Matus addressed the challenges and progress in achieving SDG 6 in the region, with a particular focus on equity.

Durante la Gira Tecnológica en Alemania, organizada en el marco del “Foro Permanente de Diálogo Técnico sobre Innovación, Desarrollo Tecnológico y Agregación de Valor al Litio de los países del Triángulo del Litio y México” que coordina la CEPAL, los representantes de los países de la región tuvieron la oportunidad de conocer las últimas innovaciones llevadas a cabo en el país europeo en la cadena de valor del litio, incluyendo tecnologías sostenibles de extracción y procesamiento con potencial de implementación en sus respectivos países, y aprovecharon el diálogo con los distintos interlocutores (del ámbito científico, del sector público y del sector privado empresarial) para intercambiar ideas, cotejar los retos actuales del sector y explorar oportunidades de colaboración.
