First conversation on female leadership in the geospatial field: Challenges and opportunities

18 December 2024|Event

Promoting female leadership in the geospatial sector is crucial to achieving gender equality and maximizing the human and technological potential of the field. UN-GGIM: Americas reaffirms its commitment to initiatives that recognize and empower the role of women in geospatial information management.

Women, girls, and adolescents represent half of the global population, and their empowerment is crucial for sustainable development and gender equality. While female empowerment fosters innovation and economic growth, gender inequality persists, limiting the rights and opportunities of women and girls. According to the 2023 SDG Report, progress towards gender equality (SDG 5) is limited, with only 15.4% of indicators on track. If this pace continues, it is estimated that it will take 140 years to achieve equitable representation of women in leadership positions in the workforce.

UN Women works in key areas such as governance participation, economic autonomy, the eradication of violence, and women’s contributions to peace and resilience. In the geospatial sector, women are underrepresented and face persistent barriers to their professional development. To address this, UN-GGIM: Americas adopted Resolution 10/10, committing to promoting an inclusive environment and recognizing the contributions of women in this field.

In line with this commitment, UN-GGIM: Americas organized a conversation on female leadership in geospatial, with the participation of leaders from organizations such as Women+ in Geospatial and Geochicas. This event seeks to reflect on the challenges and opportunities faced by women leaders, share experiences, and promote strategies to foster equity and inclusion in the sector.
