ECLAC, in its capacity of Technical Secretariat of the Declaration on Principle 10 in Latin America and the Caribbean, together with representatives of the governments of Chile and Costa Rica and civil society organizations from the region, took part in the Fifth Session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Aarhus Convention and the Second Session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Kiev Protocol held in Maastricht (Netherlands) between 29 June and 4 July 2014.

In the first ever United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) held in Nairobi (Kenya) between 23 and 27 June 2014, delegates and representatives from 163 Member States of the United Nations adopted resolution UNEP/EA.1/L.13 on the “Implementation of Principle 10 in the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development”.

The 50 Meeting of the Presiding Officers of the Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean invited the Technical Secretariat of the Declaration to present the process on Principle 10 in Latin America and the Caribbean. The presentation offered a general overview of the process and referred to the links between gender and Principle 10.

Delegates from ECLAC's member States and associate members, gathered in Lima, Peru, between 5 and 9 May 2014, approved Resolution 686 (XXXV) on the Application of Principle 10 of the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The United Nations Human Rights Council adopted a resolution on human rights and the environment (A/HRC/25/L.31) in its twenty-fifth session. It its resolution, the Council notes with appreciation the reports of the Independent Expert on the issue of human rights obligations relating to the enjoyment of a safe, clean, healthy and sustainable environment.

The Ministers of Environment and Heads of Delegation to the Forum of Ministers of Environment of Latin America and the Caribbean gathered in Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, Mexico from 12 to 14 March 2014 invited countries of the region to further develop actions on the implementation of the rights of access to information, public participation and access to environmental justice set forth in Principle 10 of the Rio Declaration.

Trinidad and Tobago became the twelfth country in Latin America and the Caribbean to adhere to the Declaration on the application of Principle 10 of the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development. The announcement was made during the Conference on Sustainable Development in Latin America and the Caribbean: follow-up to the United Nations development agenda beyond 2015 and to Rio+20, which took place on March 7-9, 2013 in Bogota, Colombia.
