En el marco del proceso de negociación del Acuerdo regional sobre acceso a la información, la participación y la justicia en asuntos ambientales en América Latina y el Caribe, el Ministerio de Medio Ambiente de Chile (MMA), la Comisión Económica para América Latina y el Caribe (CEPAL) y el Programa de las Naciones Unidas para el Desarrollo (PNUD) organizaron el pasado 9 de noviembre el taller “Más y mejor democracia ambiental para Chile y Latinoamérica y el Caribe”.

The Survey asserts that the rights of access to information, participation and justice are key to tackle inequalities and build climate change resilience strategies. These rights not only ensure that the environmental problems affecting disadvantaged groups and vulnerable communities are adequately addressed but also that policy decisions take into consideration the needs of those groups.

In his last report submitted to the United Nations General Assembly, dated 3 August 2016 (A/71/281), the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders refers to the dangers faced by the defenders to a safe and healthy environment. In view of the situation in the region, the Special Rapporteur urges negotiating parties in Latin America and the Caribbean to expedite the conclusion of the regional agreement on Principle 10.

In the framework of the 15th Annual Session of the Canada-Chile Commission for Environmental Cooperation, held in Santiago on 28 and 29 January 2016, at the request of the Government of Chile, ECLAC delivered the keynote address in the public session entitled: “2030 Agenda: the role of civil society in the Sustainable Development Goals”.
